A letter from Felipe Ramirez
WINEMAKER, ROSE & ARROW ESTATE
Harvest 2024 came in very ideal conditions. It brought us back to a more balanced and fresh Willamette Valley season. Perhaps the most balanced in the last 10 years. The very low disease pressure, balanced crop loads, and exceptional natural acidity made us extremely excited. For me, the challenge was even higher, because everyone at the winery desired to craft a perfect wine. However, the truth is that if something is perfect, there is no room for imagination, intelligence, ability, or improvement. We believe that true progress comes from trying to be better than what came before. So, can we be better than 2023?, maybe with the help of such a fantastic season…
The season started with a wet winter that nicely recharged groundwater reserves, followed by a cooler-than-average spring with good soil moisture. A warmer August helped vines catch up from a cool spring start, though a few high heat spikes tested our alertness before temperatures cooled just in time for ripening
Everything looks so perfect, but honestly if a wine is truly perfect, no further progress can happen. It leaves no space for new ideas, learning, or imagination and we love the beauty of the imperfection.
As a winegrower, just as for a scientist or a creator, reaching the absolute end of improvement means growth stops entirely. In art, coding, writing, and engineering, the magic happens in the next version. A finished project isn’t perfect; it is just a stepping stone to the next, better thing you will create.
2024, it’s not about perfection, it’s just about getting better
So, are we better than 2023? The 2024 season said yes and I agree
Cheers!
